Illnesses that could pose a risk during an Ayahuasca ceremony are: severe renal diseases, instable diabetes mellitus, epilepsy and serious neurological disorders, very high blood pressure, heart diseases, vascular diseases (angina pectoris, cerebral hemorrhage or stroke), factual or to be expected pheochromocytoma, dysfunctional thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), liver disorders, or abnormal blood cells (blood dyscrasias).
With certain serious, instable mental illnesses like schizophrenia, psychosis and borderline symptoms Ayahuasca is not recommended.
Ayahuasca contains an MAO-inhibitor and does not combine well with medication like antidepressants, beta blockers and antihypertensives.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are also counter-indications for using Ayahuasca.
The ceremonies are not to be considered a therapeutic treatment and are definitely not a substitution for regular medicine and/or mental health care in any way.
